Education is Power

Education is Our Power

Because 45% of the adult population has basic skills deficiencies, adult education services are important to many sectors of society.  Northern Nevada Literacy Council, one of Nevada’s eight Adult Basic Education programs, offers classes to provide adults in Washoe County the opportunity to improve their basic skills, English proficiency, or prepare to take the official GED test battery.  Improving their skills and obtaining their GED will help these adults become effective citizens and contributing members of society.

Adult Basic Education is important because:

  • New jobs require advanced skills.  Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce concluded that by 2018, 63% of all jobs will require some form of postsecondary education or training.

  • Children of parents who are unemployed and have not completed high school are 5 times more likely to drop out than children of employed parents.

  • Dropouts are 8 times more likely to be in jail or prison than high school graduates.

  • Dropouts from the class of 2008 will cost Nevada almost $1.3 billion in lost wages over their lifetimes.
