Work Place Services

Be concerned about the impact your employees’ lack of basic academic skills and work soft skills are having on your profitability.  Northern Nevada Literacy Council (NNLC) can provide cost-effective training in these areas for your employees in a manner conducive to your needs.

NNLC offers these 3 areas to help you:

  • NNLC can provide information for you to distribute to your employees. This information will encourages them to attend NNLC’s Traditional Program of Instruction classes on their own time and at no cost to you. These classes are provided at NNLC’s Adult Learning Center morning or mid-day Monday through Thursday for 2 ½ hours each day.  Adult Basic Skill classes and ESL classes are from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  Our Transition classes, which are higher academic levels and also prepare the adult student to take the official GED Test battery, are from 12:00 noon – 2:30 p.m.  Two levels of ESL instruction are also offered evenings from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Please see the “For Students” tab on this website for further explanation of our Traditional Program of Instruction classes.

  • NNLC can provide components of our Traditional Program of Instruction at your site. This service can be done at your convenience and on a fee-for-service basis. This can be a cost-effective way for you to address specific academic skills or soft skills such as math skills, problem solving and critical thinking skills, or effective communication skills.  NNLC staff is available to meet with you to help identify your needs and develop a curriculum that will effectively address specific workplace skills you want your employees to improve.

  • NNLC can custom design an instructional program to best fit your needs.  We will conduct a Workplace Inventory with you. A Workplace Inventory identifies specific academic skills and/or workplace soft skills that are required to effectively carry out particular job functions such as giving verbal instructions to a co-worker, writing memorandums, completing a computation, or responding to a customer’s concern.  Once the Workplace Inventory is completed, NNLC designs curriculum specific to the needs identified and conducts classes for your employees at your site on a fee-for-service basis.

Your business can increase profits, save time, lower costs and improve productivity by enhancing your employees’ core knowledge, soft skills, and attitudes.  Here is a formula to help you determine your ROI (Return on Investment) from implementing a Workplace Skills program:

Step 1 – Estimate the annual dollar value to your company of an employee whose skills need upgrading.  (For example, John’s job might have a value of $50,000 to the company each year.)

Step 2 – List the major components of the employee’s job and decide what percent of the total job each component comprises.  (One component of John’s job makes up 10% of his total value, or $5,000.)

Step 3 – Estimate the efficiency with which the employee is performing this component of the job.  (If John is performing this task at 40% efficiency, then it is only worth $2,000.  That leaves a skill gap of $3,000.)

Step 4 – Estimate the percent of anticipated improvement with training.

Step 5 – Compare the annual improvement in performance to the cost of training to determine your ROI.
