Fundraisers
Northern Nevada Literacy Council’s primary source of funding is through Title II of the Workforce Investment Act, the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act. These are federal funds that flow from the U. S. Department of Education to the Nevada Department of Education and out us by competitive grant meeting 88% of our annual budget needs. The remaining 12% is met through NNLC’s fund raising efforts…

Keep in mind, SPELLBINDER competitors are all adults working in Washoe County businesses or organizations, and as they compete in this zany event, they often wonder if they are “smarter than a 5th grader!” A Silent Auction accompanies the evening’s event with awesome items donated by local businesses. For more information about how your business can participate, contact NNLC or visit www.nnlcspellbinder.com |

Charitable Contributions...NNLC is a dully register non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization and has three very distinct ways it can utilize your contribution, regardless how big or small.
- Student Recognition – Federal funds cannot be used to recognize our students. Your contributions will allow us to hold semi-annual recognition events for our students.
- GED Scholarships – Many of our students who are ready to take the official GED Test battery are unable to pay the required $60 test fee. NNLC has a restricted fund, made possible through contributions, to provide $60 scholarships to students who apply. Students must prove hardship to be eligible for the scholarship.
- General Operating Expenses – As previously stated, NNLC must raise 12% of its annual budget not covered by its primary funding source. These expenses include a portion of the rent for our Adult Learning Center, repair and maintenance costs, upgrades to our 15-station computer lab, etc.

Spellbinder...a corporate team spelling bee held in the spring each year. The “Best Cheering Section” glitzy trophy has had a hand in building SPELLBINDER into a hilarious, looked-forward-to annual event. Spelling words used in the National Spelling Bee, International Game Technology’s (IGT’s) team has won the revolving trophy 8 out of 14 years of the event. Businesses sponsor their three-person teams, at one of the four different levels of sponsorship, or their sponsorship goes toward sponsoring a team from one of NNLC’s Collaborative Partners.
